La Martinique et la route du rhum

Dive into the Heart of Rum History

Explore Habitation Clément. Located in the southeast of the island, in the municipality of Le François, this exceptional place covers 160 hectares. During this visit, you will learn the techniques of crafting Rhum Clément.

Continue the Rum Route by heading to the Depaz distillery in Saint-Pierre. It is one of the most prestigious and oldest rum distilleries on the island. There, you will discover its sugarcane field and the buildings for distillation, including its historically significant master’s house.

Immerse yourself in the history of Saint-James rum at its museum in Sainte-Marie. A small train will take you through sugarcane plantations, the estate, and the rum workshop.

Sugar Cane and Banana, the Emblematic Ingredients of the Island

Visit the House of Sugar (Maison de la Canne) to learn about its history. It is located in a former distillery in the Vatable district in Trois-Ilets. Sugar cane has undergone many changes over the past three centuries.

Next, head to the Banana Museum. A fruit that pairs perfectly with rum and sugar cane. Its history, cultivation, and production will no longer have secrets for you! You can see that you can get by just fine without necessarily engaging in water sports all day on the island’s coasts.

La Martinique et sa cathédrale

Discovering Cathedrals and a Library in Martinique

You will be amazed by the beauty of the Church of Balata. It is an identical replica, but smaller, of the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral in Paris. Located on Savon Hill, it offers a sublime viewpoint of the bay and the island’s capital.

During your stay in Martinique, also consider visiting Saint-Louis Cathedral. Destroyed multiple times (earthquake, fire, cyclone), the current Church was rebuilt in 1978. The building was designed by Pierre-Henri PICQ, who was also the architect of the Schœlcher library.

This library has been classified as a historical monument. You will be astonished by the beautiful yellow and red mosaic facade. Nearly 130,000 works are waiting to be discovered.
